Our Story

Local401Artists was started by Kristin Solomon, a Rhode Island native, during the early days of Covid. During a time when artists and artisans across Rhode Island faced unprecedented challenges, including the loss of exhibitions, markets, and reliable income, she began connecting local artists with local businesses. This effort led to the creation of “walls in spaces,” curated mini exhibitions showcasing the work of local artists in community settings ranging from real estate offices to hair salons, bringing customers to both the artists and the hosting businesses.

As traditional avenues for artistic engagement disappeared, she also organized artisan markets, creating opportunities for artists and makers to sell their work and keep their businesses afloat during a difficult time.

Kristin’s grassroots initiative to support and uplift local artists across Rhode Island proved fruitful. In the years that followed, the number of artisan markets grew, along with participation from Rhode Island artists and makers. Recognizing both the impact of these efforts and the need for continued support, she expanded the scope of her work.

In 2025, Local401Artists was formally established as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. With an active Board and a growing mission, the organization has introduced new initiatives, including free educational workshops for artists, artist social gatherings, and community art classes taught by local creatives.

With additional plans in development and increasing requests from artists for more resources, the organization hopes to secure funding through 401 Gives to continue expanding its impact and supporting Rhode Island’s creative community.

Central to our mission is a commitment to equity and inclusion. Local401Artists actively cultivates a supportive environment that celebrates diverse voices, backgrounds, and artistic disciplines, ensuring that opportunities are accessible to a broad range of creatives across Rhode Island.
